César Plaza is a Research Scientist in the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (CSIC), where he leads the “Soil organic matter, environmental waste management, and global change” research group. He graduated in Chemistry in 1998 and earned his PhD (European Doctorate) in Environmental and Agricultural Chemistry in 2002 from the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain). After completing his doctorate, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Bari (Italy) for two years. In 2005, he joined the Centre for Environmental Sciences (CSIC) as a Juan de la Cierva Postdoc Fellow and, since 2006, as a Ramón y Cajal Fellow. He became a Tenured Scientist in 2008. He has been affiliated with the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society at Northern Arizona University (USA) for two years (2015-2017), supported by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, and has been a Visiting Scientist at other universities and research centers in Spain, Italy, UK, Canada, and USA. He has also served as Associate Editor for Journal of Environmental Quality (2009-2015) and Scientific Reports (2019-2021), among other journals, Chair of the Soil Chemistry Subdivision of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) (2016-2018), and Member of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture Expert Group on Fertilization (2020-). His research interests focus on the properties, functions, and dynamics of soil organic matter (mechanisms of soil organic matter stabilization and C sequestration), treatment of organic wastes for use in agriculture as soil amendments (composting, pyrolysis, etc.), and effects of agricultural practices on crops and soils (soil organic matter and CO2 emissions).
